Cutthroat Box Office Results On Chuseok Season
Many people expected a triangular battle at the box office during the traditional thanksgiving holiday of Chuseok. They thought
The Throne that opened on September 16th,
THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE and
The Long Way Home that released a week later on September 24th would compete for the top of Chuseok box office, one of the peak seasons. However the result was somewhat different.
The Throne maintained the top on the chart for two weeks, a comedy
THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE did somewhat well, but
The Long Way Home does not live up to expectations.
The Throne was number one for two weeks straight, drawing 2.19 million moviegoers during the Chuseok holiday weekend from September 26th to 29th. THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE earned second place with 1,135,000 viewers, even though it has nearly half admissions of The Throne’s. Meanwhile The Long Way Home settled at fifth place with only 400,000 audiences.
Instead, Two hollywood films Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and The Intern filled the empty space. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, releasing on the same day as The Throne, stayed in third place in its second weekend, attracting 797,000 spectators during the four days of Chuseok holiday. Against all odds, Nancy Meyers’ juicy drama The Intern opened in fourth place with 595,000 viewers. The film took the top spot, beating out The Throne in its second week.
It is a common notion that domestic movies and comedies are perfect for Chuseok all the time. Because they are good for the whole family from kids to the elderly. However, around Chuseok this year, the theaters were dominated by films like The Throne in which father kills his son, hollywood teenager action-packed sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and the drama rather than comedy The Intern from America. No eternal verity, no everlasting number one.
